Why is DMT So Expensive?
DMT is pricey due to its rarity, as well as the unique and potent psychedelic journey it provides. A handful of cities have decriminalized DMT derived from natural materials. 5-MeO
DMT is a chemical compound in the alkaloid family. It comes in a variety of forms that can affect the price. Dimethyltryptamine is found worldwide in both plants and animals. It is even present in our own brains.
When purchasing DMT to smoke or vape, either 5-MeO-DMT, short for 5-Methoxy-N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, or N,N-Dimethyltryptamine are the likely choices. These two varieties oftentimes come under the umbrella label of DMT. However, to any connoisseur they yield noticeably different experiences. The price point between the two varieties is also slightly different. 5-MeO-DMT tends to lean slightly higher, due to its rarity and the full-body experience it provides. 5-MeO-DMT has a few extra atoms attached to the hallucinogenic compound, adding a heightened shift in perspective. This shift, combined with the extremely visual psychedelic experience, is a much welcomed addition for many users.
In addition, there is a form of 5-MeO DMT derived from the venom of the Sonoran Desert toad, Bufo alvarius, that is not typically sold to people (the end user) in bulk quantities. Vape pens are an incredibly convenient way to ingest DMT; but they don’t necessarily provide the highest level of quality DMT experience. In addition, their manufacture is unregulated, which leads to a wide range in quality.
DMT can also come in a white powder form, a crystalline substance that can range from yellow to orange or red, or a sticky goo from the same spectrum of color. The psychedelic substance has a musky smell and taste, often associated with burning plastic—or “burnt He-Man dolls,” as some refer to it. The white powder or crystalline form is usually synthetic 5-MeO, and commands a higher price.
From a trusted source the common price point for DMT can vary from $150–$250 per gram.
Common Strains
Mimosa: This is the most common strain of DMT available. It comes from the Mimosa hostilis plant. Mimosa is also the least expensive. While still very potent, in some cases it can be weaker than some of the other varieties. Its price is approximately $150 per gram
Acacia: This form is less a common variety of DMT than Mimosa. Acacia is similar to Mimosa, but can be more potent. It commands a more mid-tier price at approximately $200 per gram
Synthetic 5-MeO: The white powder or crystal form is usually synthetic 5-MeO, commanding a price at the higher end of the spectrum, approximately $250 per gram.
Learn how to get DMT through particular DMT resources and origins. On the dark web, it is not uncommon to see a price point upwards of $300 per gram of DMT. But buying anything on the dark web to ingest is not recommended. Look for a source with positive reviews, preferably from a trustworthy individual you know firsthand. How Much Does DMT Cost In Large Quantities?
For many, purchasing a large quantity of DMT might feel a little extreme. But if the funds are available, the price point can drop dramatically.
One ounce of DMT usually costs $2,800.00, almost $100 per gram (or more).
Purchasing a quarter pound of DMT (4 ounces) can bring the price point down to around $75 per gram, or about $8,400.
How to Smoke DMT and What to Expect
If vaping DMT, again, please refer to our article above (How to Use DMT Vape Pens). If your substance is in powder, crystal, or sticky goo form, we suggest using a standard glass pipe. The substance will easily fall through the hole of the pipe without a base. People commonly recommend cannabis as a smoking base to hold the DMT in the pipe; but any dried herb that is safe to inhale can be used. Sprinkle a pinch of DMT (no less than 0.2 mg) over the cannabis or herbal base, and hold a flame to the DMT for the duration of your inhale. It is recommended you inhale deeply. Hold for as long as possible before exhaling. Remember to sit up straight, relaxing your shoulders and breath. This will bring more clarity to the experience.
After holding in a large hit for as long as possible, the effects of DMT will emerge, often with an intense visual kaleidoscope of fractals. The DMT experience usually peaks within the first 1–3 minutes, and the effects are usually fully gone within 15–20 minutes of inhaling. Ingesting DMT, in the form of ayahuasca brew, has a longer-lasting effect of about an hour.
Storing DMT: Shelf Life
There is an ongoing debate in the DMT world about proper DMT storage and shelf life. As with most psychoactive substances, the golden rule is: airtight, cool, and dark for the longest shelf life. The freezer debate is ongoing, although for under a year of storage it seems a solid choice when in an airtight container.
